What is the Growth Guarantee Scheme?

The Growth Guarantee Scheme (GGS) is a British Business Bank scheme that gives accredited lenders a 70% government guarantee on loans, overdrafts, asset finance and invoice finance to UK smaller businesses — generally up to £2m per business group. The guarantee is to the lender: your business remains liable for 100% of the debt.

How it works

Tell us about your business and what you need. Your dedicated account manager compares growth guarantee scheme options from across our lending panel, prepares the application on your behalf and presents a clear, no-obligation quote. There is no impact on your credit score until you choose to proceed.

Who is it for?

UK limited companies, partnerships and sole traders in almost every sector — from start-ups to established businesses, including those with a less-than-perfect credit history.

Growth Guarantee Scheme: common questions

Is the Growth Guarantee Scheme still open?

Yes. GGS opened in July 2024 as the successor to the Recovery Loan Scheme and has been extended to 2030. In July 2026 the government announced a major expansion of the scheme’s capacity.

How long can a GGS loan run for?

From 2026, term loans of up to £1.1m can run for up to 10 years, up from the previous six-year maximum. Other facility types have their own limits.

Do I apply for GGS through the government?

No. Applications go through accredited lenders, who make the lending decision. We work with GGS-accredited lenders and can tell you which suit your business.

Can my home be taken as security under GGS?

No — a principal private residence cannot be taken as security under the scheme. Lenders may still ask for personal guarantees in some cases.
